It doesn’t matter if you are Subscription Box, membership site, SAAS product or even a local gym. These books will help you to master the subscription business model and gain valuable knowledge on your path to financial and entrepreneurial freedom.
These books have personally helped me master my own journey and my hope is that you can take even one little nugget from each book and turn that into meaningful change in your life.
So please do yourself a favour and grab these books, study them and implement the teachings.
Let’s crack on
Subscription Business Model Specific Books
These books are central to understanding exactly how powerful a subscription-based business is and how you can implement the lessons learned by companies like Netflix, Amazon and Apple.
This is my #1 pick for any book on the Subscription business model. Robbie Baxter is a true intellect on all things membership and subscription, having worked with companies like Netflix, she knows the perfect formula for perfecting subscription success.
This short and simple book lays the foundation for marketing a subscription business. I recommend this short read as an entry point to anyone contemplating running a membership or subscription box business.
The Automatic Customer is a detailed guide on subscription marketing. Where I got a lot out of this book was its deep dive into the metrics that fuel a subscription business. It helps you to really understand what success looks like and how to measure it within your business.
Hooked is about creating products that keep your customers coming back, time and time again. This easy read will have you re-assessing your business idea and then implementing some amazing ways of engaging your customers through “hooks” that keep them staying and paying for longer.
Community Building Books
Having a community-based element your business is a huge part of customer retention. These books go deep into community building and management using simple and proven steps.
If your subscription Box has a community element to it – think social media, FacebookGroup or physical group – then reading this book will change the way you manage it. The case studies and examples within it are gold.
Tribe is written by my all-time favourite marketer; Seth Godin. While this book isn’t specifically about building a community it highlights the importance of a community or “tribe” within you product creation and marketing. Read this book– it’s a must. It’s short and will only take you the better part of a long lunch, it’s worth it.
Marketing your product Books
Want to know how the best marketers in the world sell millions of dollars in products a day? These books will teach you the ins and outs of marketing from the best brains in the business.
Want to build a business that seems to market itself effortlessly? Good – read this book. It’s a manifesto for building a sales machine for a business without feeling stuck or not knowing where to start. It’s actionable, easy to read and is waiting to insert itself into your brain.
The first time I read this book I managed to get to the second chapter without standing up immediately and getting sh*t done. It was 10pm at night and I put the book down, got up and started creating this very website.
If you can read this book and not be inspired to take action and share your amazing story and ideas with the word then you are truly a monster lol.
Dan Meredith is one of the great wave of modern copywriter, marketers and Guru’s (don’t tell him I used the “G” word). Buy this damn book now.
Two Seth Godin Books that just rock my socks. Both of these books simply and succinctly help you get your message into the hands of your “tribe” and help you to stand out from the crowd. It’s about having a core message or story that is unique to you and becomes your “Purple Cow” for standing out in busy markets.
I can gush all day about Seth Godin, but I won’t. Just read everything you can get your hands on by him.
Ryan Levesque is one smart cookie. This book transformed the way I approach marketing new projects to my audiences by using a Survey Funnel to find out exactly what they want.
I’ve found the audio version of this book a bit easier to swallow but having the physical copy for understanding how the survey’s work is a big advantage.
Basically this book gives you the cheat codes to marketing to your audience. It’s like you are in their head.
Next to Seth – Don Miller is my jam. His book is a condensed version of his online course by the same name and I can’t suggest you read this enough. Most businesses suck at telling customers what they do and why they should do business together – this book fixes that.
Understand your customer’s journey and place them at the centre of your marketing and you will make a sh*t load more money.
This selection has been chosen to help you build a business the right way. These books taught me how to value my time and build freedom rather than fall into the trappings of being a small business owner.
I picked this book up when I was 22 by chance and I was simply amazed. I didn’t know that by picking this book up it would completely change the way I approach and look at the business. If you want to escape from the idea of being a small business owner and transform yourself into an entrepreneur then you need to read this book. Systems, SOP’s and building businesses to sell are the core themes of this book.
It’s worth picking up the companion book– E-Myth Mastery: The Seven EssentialDisciplines for Building a World Class Company, once you have finished it.
It was in a bookshop in Japan that I picked this book up. Tim Ferriss is the master at inspiring you to build a business that funds your lifestyle. Find your “muse” with this book and use it as a vehicle to fuel your mini-retirement. This is the bible for all digital nomads out there.
The information still holds true after several years of publication – just substitute Google Adwords with Facebook Ads.
I must confess, I listened, rather than read this book but it was amazing. In fact I believe that hearing the stories from these amazing Special Forces operators themselves had a far greater impact on how I absorbed these stories.
The book details the exploits of two Navy SEALS during campaigns in Iraq and places the situations and lessons learned into real-life business lessons. Lessons they have taught to corporations throughout the world.
This is a must for team building and leadership in general.
Stuck with imposter syndrome or drowning in the idea that you are simply not cut out for entrepreneurship?
Well pick up any one of these books and be done with that nonsense. You ARE good enough and you CAN do this. Now go buy a book and start believing that yourself.
Every page is a new Day. Just read one page a day and get your Stoic on like the most-feared Roman conquerors of old.
The texts are translated from among the famous Roman Stoic’s – Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the playwright Seneca, and Epictetus.
If you are looking to embrace the present, not get hung up on things and become clearer in your mind, this book will provide just that.
This is my current read and the newest book on this list. The title says it all. Written by Jocko (The Navy SEAL from Extreme Ownership) it’s one part philosophy and one part fitness manual. The mind and the body must work as one if we are to be successful and this book will prepare you for just this.
Tired of being in your own way? Do you doubt what you are capable of? Read this book. I’m not going to spoil it – just read this book. Look at the reviews alone, this book is gold.
Become the master of your own mind and start believing that you are actually good enough and you can do the things that you want to do.
When you have a goal and break it down – it becomes infinity times easier to achieve. This planner has done more for my business than any software, blog, hack or anything. Simple action every day will smash any marketing hack.
The best thing about this planner is it’s broken into 3-month sprints. Just enough time to be hard, but short enough to be achievable. Get one for business, one for your health and one to replace the planner you finish first.
Get a planner, stick to it and achieve the goal.
Well, there you go!
