Something I’m pretty proud of is that I no longer rely on Facebook Ads or PPC to get targeted customers to my Subscription Box website. Each day I get between60-100 unique visitors (about 3k per month) to my Subscription Box website thanks to Google, all for free. And this is pretty much all thanks to good on-page SEO
For those that don’t know SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. This is the process of getting Google or Bing (or whatever your search engine of choice is) to rank your Subscription Box website higher in the search rankings, you are aiming for the coveted Number 1 spot. OnPage SEO is the process of making sure your website can be read by google easily and it actually KNOWS what your site is all about.
Now, this isn’t something that happened overnight. In fact, it took a good 3-6 months before I actually started seeing any fruits of this labour, however, it wasn’t really that hard to accomplish.
Before we begin going into specifics, I want to make it very clear: I am not an SEO. I know nothing about SEO other than what I have read and self-taught. I have never paid anyone to do any SEO work on my website nor have I paid for any backlinks. My expertise has always been Facebook traffic and will continue to be Facebook traffic, but I believe that the foundation for seeing amazing results with Facebook PPC for your Subscription Box is paved in good SEO. So if I say something that is against typical SEO convention or some “old-school” way of doing thigs, don’t shoot me. This is just what has worked for me.
Now that the disclaimer is out of the way lets get on with the show.
How it works
For Google to want to rank your website it really comes down to these five things:
- Having enough relevant information on your website so Google knows exactly what your website is and who is it for.
- Having unique information – now this doesn’t mean everything has to be unique to only your patch on the internet, it just means that your website has to have different things on it – it can’t just be the same words pasted over and over again.
- Good images with the correct elements and text applied
- Mobile friendly – this means it needs to look and work well on all mobile devices AND load quickly
- Site Security – SSL certificates are becoming more and more important towards determining the trustworthiness of your site.
Now I’m not going into everything listed above. But I am going to show you the simple ways of getting some quick wins for your site.
Basic Onpage SEO – The Text
One of the first things you want to be thinking if you are going to invest time and energy into SEO is “What is it that I want to rank for? What phrases, terms and types of questions are people going to be typing into Google that is relevant to my Subscription Box?”
So to give you my own example, I run a Whisky Sample Subscription Box called TheWhisky Order. So my own line of thinking went something like this:
People who want to enjoy whisky samples might be typing in something like:
- Whisky Samples,
- Whiskey Samples,
- Whiskey taster,
- Whisky taster,
- Sample Scotch Whisky,
- Sample Australian Whisky and so on.
I knew that these queries and statements would be very relevant to someone who may want to sign up for my subscription box. In fact, this is the exact terminology I wanted to rank highly for in Google.
If you are stuck for ideas too you can use tools like the Google Keyword Planner to expand on your initial keyword thoughts and give you some ideas (plus the average number of searches)
So, the first thing I could now do is: Make sure that these terms are covered off in my homepage. Now, this didn’t mean plastering just these phrases onto my homepage, no, it just means that I now had a variety of terms and phrases I could use on my homepage.
Google loves content. It wants you to have heaps of content. So give it what it wants! Make sure your homepage has 500-600 words at a minimum and covers off on 2-3key phrases that you ultimately want to rank for. These keywords only need to appear 2-3 times in total, so don’t go overboard.
- If you are using Shopify, install a tool called ReloadSEO
- If you are using WordPress, install a plugin called YeostSEO
These tools will give you helpful hints and tips to ensure your webpages are optimised for the keywords you want to rank for. Including – All your page titles, your meta tags, Keyword Density and amount of total text. Pretty much just do what it says and you will be all sweet. Both tools are well worth the investment.
Once you are done with your homepage text we move onto…..
Basic Onpage SEO – Your Images
Images are a must for your Website. You just plain ole have to have them, because how else would a person know what it is they are buying. But those ultra highresolution images you just downloaded from Shutterstock are HUUUUUUGE. 1.5mb is just way too big for an image. It takes forever to load for your customers and slows your whole site down.
You need to make sure those image file sizes are tiny. Use a free tool like ImageOptimizer. This can reduce the image file size by over 50% on some files.
SmallerFile Size = Faster Loading Time (and happier website visitors).
Once you have finished reducing the file size of your images you need to make sure each image has a couple of little tweaks done to them. Remember how we were talking about having unique content on your site earlier? Well, this applies to your images too.
Having all your images called “Untitled Design (232434)” isn’t a good look in Googles eyes. In fact it’s confusing and infuriating to Google. So don’t do it.
Give your image a nice unique name, one that is descriptive to the actual content of the image.
“box of whisky samples.jpg” “scotch whisky samples.png” is MUCH better than: “untitled design (1).png”
Now, to continue with our naming convention you also need to take into account AltTags. Alt Tags are primarily used for people who cannot see a screen OR can’t get images to load on a website. They are the description of the actual image. So, GIVE IT A DESCRIPTION! Use Alt Tags to include some of those keywords you want to rank for AND describe the actual image “Whisky Samples sitting in a box on a desk” “A whisky order subscription box tasting set”
MORE Onpage SEO – Blog Posts
You were waiting for this one right? It’s the first thing that pops into Everyones brain when it comes to SEO.
Yeah –you are going to have to start writing BUT if you are like me and you are hella lazy then there are ways around this if you have a little bit of coin.
Once you start to identify the types of queries that people have relating to your website you are going to want to start creating helpful articles around this.Now it might now bring a huge amount of traffic to you but if you start to accumulate a steady flow of traffic from a few keywords optimised posts, you will be thanking yourself in the long run.
So to make my article creation a simple process, this is what I do:
- I go to Reddit / a Facebook group relating to Whisky
- I type in “beginner/newbie/help / I suck / where do I start” or something like that
- I find all the questions and paste them into a document
- I get all the answers and past them under the questions
- I then go to TextBroker or UpWork and hire a freelancer
- I tell the freelancer – Go forth and create me a 600 – 800-word blog article relating to this problem and solution. Make it fully sic bro.
- I get an article, I run it through the ReloadSEO checks and add in any additional keywords I need.
- I now have a fully optimised Blog Post and I didn’t do anything
Ok, so there you have it. I’ve spilled my guts on my secret sauce. No, not really. It’s just a neat little trick that has helped me with content creation. I still have a few tricks up my sleeve but I’m saving those for future articles.
